Uganda is made up of only two national parks which protect the lives of mountain gorillas and these are Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park which are the best Parks for gorilla tours in the whole world due to the highest number of mountain gorillas that it protects. It is believed that it protects over 400 mountain gorillas which is almost half of the world’s population of the mountain gorillas which is about 900 gorillas.
Bwindi impenetrable forests national park is found in South-western Uganda about 530km from the capital city of Uganda (Kampala). The Park itself protects almost half of the world’s mountain gorillas and it protects the largest number of mountain gorillas compared to other national parks in the whole world which protects mountain gorillas.
Gorilla trekking experience is one of the challenging activities thus one needs to be reasonably and physically fit before undertaking to venture into the activity. Gorillas are tracked in four different sectors in Bwindi impenetrable forests national park and these are Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo and Rushaga and you will get equal facilities in all the four sectors.
Some of the tips followed to go for gorilla tracking in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park include; you should pay for the gorilla permits three weeks before your tour and permit are bought in advance, gorilla permits cost US$ 600, you are advised to use the best tour companies for better services, you should maintain maximum silence while in the Park, you should not litter in the Park and all activities in the Park are done with the aid of the Park rangers.
In the Park, you will not be allowed to be close to the primates in order to prevent the easy spread of disease from humans to the gorillas and you should not spend with the mountain gorillas for more than 1 hour which is the recommended time to be with gorillas and the gorillas are viewed a certain distance of 5 to 7 meters from where they are. Here you will see gorillas playing and jumping from trees to trees and the adult ones will be seen protecting their young ones whenever they see an enemy.
A group of eight individuals is allowed to go for gorilla trekking in the thick forests of the Park per day and you are advised to arrive in the Park very early in the morning for the morning gorilla tracking shift which starts at 08:30am.
You will be allowed to go back to your lodge to have lunch and after having your lunch you will then shift back for the gorilla tracking activities.
Some of the best lodges in Bwindi impenetrable forests national park include; Gorilla forest camp, Silver Back lodge, Buhoma community Banda’s, Engagi lodge, Clouds lodge, Chameleon hill lodge, Buhoma haven lodge and many others and all the lodges consist of a bar, a restaurant and a swimming pool.
After your gorilla tracking, you will have to go back to your lodge for supper plus the overnight till morning. In the morning you will wake up and clean yourself and then have a breakfast. You will then be escorted by your tour company guide back to Kampala (Entebbe airport) for a flight back to your home country.
